West Point Graduate
Skyar Maurer
Panhandle High School alumna Skylar Maurer, Class of 2021, has officially begun her service as a commissioned officer in the United States Army following her graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in May 2025.
Maurer earned a degree in Engineering Psychology, a discipline that blends engineering, human behavior, and systems design to optimize performance and safety in complex environments. The field is particularly relevant in modern military operations, where understanding human factors can enhance decision-making, equipment usability, and mission effectiveness.
Upon graduation, Maurer was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and reported to Fort Sill, Okla. for 6 months to complete Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC). She recently posted to Fort Carson, Colo., the home of the 4th Infantry Division. She currently serves with the 2nd Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment — a unit known as the “Hell Hounds.”
The 2-77 FA is part of the division’s artillery forces and plays a critical role in providing fire support and battlefield coordination. The 4th Infantry Division, one of the Army’s most storied units, is recognized for its readiness, cutting edge technology and rapid deployment capabilities.
During her time at Panhandle High School, Maurer was known for her academic dedication and leadership potential. Her appointment to West Point followed a competitive selection process requiring academic excellence, physical fitness, leadership credentials, and a congressional nomination.
As she begins her Army career in Colorado, Maurer joins a long tradition of Panhandle graduates pursuing service and leadership beyond their hometown roots.
