Eighth Grade Panthers loses for game to Stratford Elks contemporaries

The Eighth Grade Panthers traveled to Stratford last Thursday evening to take on the Stratford Elks eight graders. Rain began to fall during the seventh grade game that eventually was called due to the rain. Finally, the rain let up and the eighth graders got a “go” signal.
Panhandle received the opening kickoff. On 3rd down, Quarterback Jones Winegeart passed to JJ Russell for a 1st and 10, but on 3rd and 3, the Panthers punted. The Elks scored on their first possession, but a run for 2 failed. Hunter Brame got a good return, then Winegeart had a 12-yard run, then completed a 13-yard pass to Hawkins Heck for another first down as the quarter ended.
Jones scored on a 25-yard run to open the second quarter, then ran in the 2-point PAT to put Panhandle up 8-6. At 24.7 ticks left on the clock, the Elks scored and made a 2-point PAT to go ahead 14-8. Jones got a good kickoff return then had a 9-yard run as the clock ran down. The halftime score was Panhandle 8 – Stratford 14.
Panhandle kicked off to start the second half. Heck got a fumble recovery and scored. The PAT attempt failed. At 7:08 on the clock, the score was Panhandle 14 – Stratford 14. Panhandle kicked off, and Winegeart forced an Elk fumble. Hayze Henrick recovered the fumble for Panhandle. Kayson Ogletree went in at quarterback and completed an 8-yard pass. The clock was 2:54 and Stratford took over on downs and with 22.5 remaining in the quarter, scored and made the 2-point PAT to go up 22-14. Brame had the kickoff return and Winegeart got in a carry as the third quarter came to an end with the score Panhandle 14 – Stratford 22.
Panhandle had the ball to begin the fourth quarter, but a penalty and two incomplete passes brought up a Panther punt on fourth down. Winegeart got off a 40-yard punt. Aksel Bertrand broke up a Stratford pass, then Heck stepped up for an interception. Winegeart picked up 9 yards, then completed a pass to Heck, but a fumble gave the ball back to Stratford and Stratford ran out the clock for a 22-14 win.
Jones was the Panthers’ leading tackler with 14, while Heck had 11, Ogletree – nine and Brame – seven. Rowdy Hunt and Russell each had six, Jaxxen Bichsel – five and Bertrand – four. Henrick and Kellen Biggs had three tackles each, and Ben Sadau and Isaac Watkins two each. Grady Alexander had one.
