Bob was born on Jan. 20, 1935 in Orlando, Fla., to Mittie Lampp and William Alvie Mulkey. He spent his elementary school years in Lyons, Ga. and his high school years in Greenwood, S.C. He played varsity basketball for Greenwood High School and graduated with the Class of 1953. He attended Clemson A&M College (now University) for two years before moving to Austin. He and Louise Harrell were married on Oct. 24, 1962 in Groom. They moved to Lubbock, where he worked for the City of Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University. Bob graduated with a BBA in Industrial Management in 1965. After he graduated, they lived in Amarillo for a few years and moved to Panhandle in 1969. He worked for Pantex for 31 years and retiring in 1997.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Panhandle. Bob was a loyal fan of the Panhandle Panthers and Pantherettes, following the team through the playing years of his sons and grandchildren. Bob’s favorite activity was spending time with his children and nephews and nieces, then later with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Babies could always make him smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and their spouses, Annie Ruth and Gary Jordan of Daytona Beach, Fla., Helen and P.H. Toole, and Lola and Henry Griner, all of Lyons, Ga.; a brother, Clyde Wayne “Buster” Mulkey; and his in-laws, and Sybil York and Glynn D. Harrell.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Louise; his children and their spouses, Sara-Allyson and Steven Hightower and Jeremy and Mande Mulkey, all of Panhandle, and Matthew Mulkey of Denton; grandchildren, Robert Hightower of Amarillo, Whitney Ball of Bushland, Caitlin Mulkey of Canyon, Harper and Sawyer Mulkey of Ponder; five great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Sue Mulkey of Greenwood, S.C., Glynda Eschle of Austin, and Beverly and Jim Ingram of Amarillo.
