Mary Esther Smith, 82 of Panhandle, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 31, 2020 in Panhandle.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at the Church of Christ in Panhandle. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Citizens Cemetery at Clarendon under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.
Family and friends visitation Monday at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Please follow social distancing and masks.
Mary was born on May 18, 1938 in Pampa, to Elma Corrine (Smith) and Walter Lemond Hagler. She married Gerald Smith on March 29, 1961 after he proposed to her on their first date. She helped her husband with the kids in band, so she became a mother to them. She taught in special education.
Preceding her in death is her parents; her husband; and a sister Betty Biggs.
Surviving is her daughter Debbie Gilchrest and husband Tony of Memphis, Texas; Tamra Hodges of Memphis, whom she thought of as her daughter; brothers, Jimmy Naylor and wife Kathy of Waco, Texas and Ben Naylor of Forth Worth; a sister, Virginia and husband Dub Cleveland of Mesquite, Texas; granddaughter, Trista and husband Daniel Gomez; and great-grandchildren, Santiago and Amelia. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends and the people of Panhandle, who she considered her family.
