Donald grew up in the Erick and the surrounding areas. He attended Erick public schools and graduated from high school in 1946. After graduation, he worked for Cecil Crawford in his furniture store until he entered the United States Army in 1951. During his time of service, he was deployed to Korea and was a corporal forward observer in the 39th field artillery, 3rd infantry division. Donald, along with two other men, were captured during the Korean conflict and later escaped. Even after his discharge in 1953, he remained in the reserves for three years. He later met and was married to Joy (Richardson) Brookshire in Erick on Aug. 29, 1954. Together, they made their home in Erick and Amarillo before moving back in 1969 and he took over his father’s cattle operation where he continued until 2007 when he retired. Donald enjoyed working with cattle and watching football.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Joy, of the home; two children, Doug Brookshire and wife, Linda of Panhandle and Donna and husband, Ricky Knox of Cleburne, Texas; five grandchildren, Doug Phenix and wife, Leah of Alvarado, Texas, Angie and husband, Patrick Dorney of Norman, Okla., Derek Brookshire and wife, Bobbie of Panhandle, Laci Brookshire and fiancé, Travis Stamps of Amarillo and Scott Knox and wife, Stacy of Cleburne; 13 great-grandchildren, Baylor, Tatum, Ryder, Malorie, Brayden, Nick, Libby, Wyatt, Gavan, Sawyer, Hagan, Hank and Hawkins; and a host of other relatives, and friends.
Services will be held today, Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Erick First Baptist Church officiated by Bro. Charlie Floyd. Burial will be at Erick Cemetery under the direction of Fatheree-Albert Funeral Home. Condolences can be made online at www.whineryfs.com.
