Services are pending with Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and will be announced at a later date.
Burl was born on Nov. 7, 1938 in Frederick, Okla. to Ruth and William Hickerson. He grew up and attended school in Oklahoma. He met the love of his life, Louise Roberts in high school and after graduation they married on Feb. 5, 1956. After high school, Burl enlisted in the United States Air Force and he and Louise would travel extensively and be stationed in South Dakota, New Mexico, California, and lived for over three years in Spain. After his discharge, they returned to California and Burl went to work for the California Department of Criminal Justice, serving for ten years.
After his tenure in criminal justice, he found his true calling and entered the ministry. Through the ministry, he served in Oklahoma before moving to Pampa in the 1980’s. While in Pampa, he pastored at Calvary Baptist for five years. He and Louise would later move to Houston for several years where he helped others serving as a drug and alcohol counselor for the Veterans Administration. Burl and Louise would return to the Texas Panhandle, settling in Skellytown in 2010. Burl was an interesting man who could tell a great story that captivated anyone who was listening. However, the most important things were his family, his study of the bible, and his Lord.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Hickerson; by two sisters, Nelda Baker and Norma Greeson.
His survivors include his wife Louise of the home; three sons, Lynn Hickerson of Long Beach, Calif., Dan Hickerson and wife Katrina Lesher of Skellytown, and Ed Hickerson and wife Dolly of Pampa; a brother, Leroy Hickerson and wife Barbara of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Olivia Hickerson of White Deer; three grandsons, Mike Hickerson and wife Katherine of Amarillo, Tim Hickerson of Skellytown, and Jake Hickerson of Norfolk, Va.; six great-grandchildren, Emily, Serena, Kiera, Calev, Phoenix, and Kolton; and other extended family.
