Dovie Barrett
1940 - 2014

Dovie Ann Scott Cherry Barrett, 74, of Amarillo died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014.

Memorial services were held Jan. 8, 2015, in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel with Royce Riggins officiating.

Dovie was born on May 9, 1940, in Borger to Walter Eugene and Sara Hodges Scott. She married Donald L. Cherry on Feb. 7, 1956, in Clovis, N.M. They resided in Amarillo, where Dovie practiced cosmetology. They had one daughter in 1959. In 1963, they moved to Hereford, where they started a carpet and flooring business, and Dovie opened a beauty shop for a few years. After selling her beauty shop, she worked with Don doing the books for the carpet business. In 1982, she proudly received her GED at the age of 42. In 1986, they closed the carpet business and Don became a minister; soon after, so did Dovie. She played the piano during worship services and taught adult Sunday school classes, as well as counseling those in need in the congregation.

After Don’s death in 1996, Dovie moved to Amarillo to become closer to family. She became reacquainted with Lesley Barrett, both being from the same hometown. They married on Oct. 3, 1998, in Canyon. Soon after the death of her mother in 2001, she founded 7 Star Horse and Family Center which soon became 7 Star Therapeutic Riding Center. She began using miniature horses for therapy at schools, nursing homes and the like.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters Doolie Snow, Billie Wilson and Audrey Taylor; a son-in-law, Rohn Ryder; a grandson-in-law, Doug Barnett; and a stepdaughter, Rhonda Zeigler.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Leesa Ryder of Happy; four grandchildren, Nicole Barnett, Veronica Ryder of Amarillo and Buster and Donald Ryder of Happy; two great-grandchildren, Eathen and Logan Barnett of Amarillo; three stepchildren, Brenda Topper of Wheeler, Linda Hill of Panhandle and Lesley Barrett Jr of Amarillo; and their children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to 7 Star Therapeutic Riding Center, P.O. Box 50655, Amarillo, TX 79159; or Patriotic Paws, 254 Ranch Trail, Rockwall, TX 75032.
