27th Annual Fajita Dinner

The White Deer United Methodist Church is holding their 27th Annual Fajita Dinner on Sunday, March 8, in the Fellowship Hall at 101 W. 8th, White Deer.

Church members will be serving guests from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The dinner is all you can eat. Adult plates are $10 and children’s plates are $5.

Everyone is invited to attend this delicious event.

Does Defeat Miami, Move Into Regional Quarterfinals

The White Deer Does traveled to Amarillo to face Miami in the Region 1-1A Area championship game on Friday, Feb. 20.

The Does came out smoking as Jaden Freeman nailed three threes and Cassidy Crutchfield hit two threes in the first quarter as the Does raced out to a 19-6 lead. J. Freeman hit another three in the second and the Doe defense smothered the Lady Warriors and went to the locker room up 37-12 at half.

Crutchfield hit two more threes in the third and the defense continued to pressure as the Does led 54-18 after three quarters and won the area game 65-26.

J. Freeman led the team with 15 points. Crutchfield added 14 points while contributing five assists. Angela Parsley added eight. Rylee Brown scored six and played good defense. Destany Perriman added five. Merrit Mitchell and Skylar Freeman each had four. Karlee Vigil and Courtney Barrow added three each. Chancie King added two. Raegan Brown had four steals and Alex Taylor contributed to the win.
Getting off to a fast start was huge and the defensive effort was outstanding. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who sent us off and to all the wonderful fans who showed up to support us; our side was full!

The Does faced 1A #5 Follett for the right to move on to the regional tournament. The regional quarterfinal was be Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Canyon at the WT Event Center.

Friday, Feb. 27 Last Day To File

The last day to file an application for White Deer School Board or the city elections for White Deer or Skellytown is Friday, Feb. 27.
White Deer ISD has two positions available. Position one is currently held by Terry Harrah and Position two is held by Brad Haiduk. As of press time on Wednesday, Feb. 26, Mr. Haiduk has applied for Position two and Daniel Mooney has applied for Position one.

The City of White Deer will be voting for three council seats and a one-year mayoral term. Currently the council seats are held by Michael Lenz, Linda Robertson and Lyn Luster. Kent Kelp is the current mayor. At press time, Lyn Luster, Linda Robertson, Michael Lenz and Randy Barrett have applied to run for the three council seats.

In Skellytown there are three council seats opening. Wanda Rogers, Steven Denham and Jack Garrard currently hold those seats. As of press time, no one has applied to run for the available seats.

On Monday, Feb. 23, during the school board meeting the Board of Trustees recognized the students who made the first semester All A Honor Roll. Board President, Brad Haiduk gave certificates to each of the students. Congratulations to all the students for their hard work. Texas A&M AgriLife To Host Cotton Production And Sorghum Meeting

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Carson County will be conducting a Cotton Production and Sorghum Meeting on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. The meeting will begin with registration at 10 a.m. at the White Deer Community Center.

The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with speakers and topics to include: Mark Kelly – Variety Selection and New Variety Technology, Dr. Peter Dotray – Weed Management and Herbicides and Q&A , Dr. Steve Amosson – Cotton and Sorghum Budgets as well as Market Outlook and Dr. Jourdan Bell – Sorghum Productions, Sorghum Rotation and Herbicides.

Two CEU’s will be offered and lunch will be provided by Carson County Gin. Please RSVP by 5 p.m. on March 1, 2015, to the Carson County Extension Office at 537-3882. If you leave a message, please leave your name and a return phone number.

Darlene David

Darlene David, 71, died Feb. 24, 2015, in Pampa.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at Central Baptist Church, with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mrs. David was born Nov. 9, 1943, in Sacramento, Calif. She had been a lifelong resident of Pampa. She married Vincon David Sr. on Sept. 9, 1970, in Pampa. He preceded her in death on July 26, 2005. Darlene was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was a loving mother who took care of many friends and family. For the past four years, she was a caretaker for Helen Hall.

Darlene was preceded in death by a son, Charlie David in 1984.

Survivors include five sons, Donald “Cooder” Coil John Coil and wife Donna and Shane Hagle, all of Pampa, Vincon “Buddy” David Jr. and wife Dawn of De Beque, Colo., and Harold “Blue Boy” Hagle and wife Kathy of Pueblo, Colo.; two daughters, Donna “Red” Winkleblack and Monte Lackey of Pampa and Julie David of Lubbock; a sister, Birdie Nunn of Skellytown; two brothers, Sonny Watkins and Dale Watkins both of Mountainberg, Ark.; 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; and her three dogs, Taz, Kacy and Little Dog.

Carol Jean Kotara, 70, of Pampa, died in Pampa on Feb. 23, 2015.

Vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel. Liturgy of the Word will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Rev. Scott Raef, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral of Amarillo, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Ms. Kotara was born May 31, 1944, in Pampa. She had been a lifelong resident of Pampa and White Deer, graduating from Pampa High School in 1962. Carol loved publishing her farm and ranch magazine and the senior’s edition, and she loved raising her children and being there for them. She was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority in White Deer. She was a member of the Altar Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in White Deer, and worked many years at the polish sausage dinner. Carol worked many years at the Green Punkin Restaurant in White Deer. She married John Kotara III, in 1963, in White Deer, and after their separation they continued to be good friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her uncle, Jean Douglass, in 1983; her father, Loyd Wilson, in 1994; and grandparents, George and Ida Douglass, and Walter and Maude Wilson.

Survivors include her four children, John Kotara IV and Tracy Kotara, both of White Deer; Karla Kotara of Denton and Kalina Anderson and husband Rick of Frisco; her mother, Mary McDaniel of Pampa; four grandchildren, John Jarett Kotara and wife Lindsay and Haili Kotara, all of Pampa, and Alexis Anderson and Raelin Anderson, both of Frisco; and four great grandchildren, Rylan, Makenna, John Kolt and Brenli; and her “forever friend,” Sherry Kotara Hill of Houston.

White Deer ISD School Board Minutes

Editor’s Note: The following minutes have not been approved by the Board of Trustees. The White Deer News is not responsible for typographical errors, but has only formatted the minutes to its space and style requirements.

A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the White Deer Independent School District was held on Feb. 23, 2015, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the White Deer ISD Cafeteria, White Deer, Texas.

Members present were Kane Barrow, Blaine Bolton, Joe Don Brown, Shane Grange, Brad Haiduk and Jim Bob Mitchell. Also in attendance were Karl Vaughn, Denise Adams, Rex Beck, Billy Boone, Darla Forney, Paul Jasin with Specialized Public Finance and Wendy Ruthardt.
“A” Honor Roll students in attendance were Justin Tracy, Kaycee Windsor, Claire Crutchfield, Jacey Haiduk, Kayden Smith, Rylee Brown, Merrit Mitchell, Skylar Freeman and Cassidy Crutchfield.

Board member Terry Harrah was absent.

After a quorum was established, the meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Brad Haiduk. The prayer was offered by Mr. Mitchell.

Superintendent Vaughn welcomed the “A” Honor Roll students and parents. President Haiduk presented certificates to the students who made the All “A” Honor Roll.

The Board recessed and reconvened in the Board Room at the Administration Building.

Mr. Mitchell moved to approve the agenda of the Feb. 23, 2015, regular board meeting. Second by Mr. Barrow. Motion carried 6-0-0.

Mr. Mitchell moved to approve the minutes of the Jan. 15, 2015, special board meeting as presented. Second by Mr. Bolton. Motion carried 5-0-1. Mr. Bolton abstained.

Mr. Bolton moved to approve the minutes of the Jan. 19, 2015, regular board meeting as presented. Second by Mr. Barrow. Motion carried 4-0-2. Mr. Brown and Mr. Mitchell abstained.

No one requested to be on the open forum.

Mr. Jasin, with Specialized Public Finance, was present to initiate the issuance of Unlimited Tax School Building Bonds, Series on behalf of White Deer ISD pursuant to the Nov. 4, 2014 Bond Election.

Mr. Mitchell moved the Board of Trustees of White Deer ISD adopt the Order authorizing the issuance and sale of White Deer Independent School District Unlimited Tax School Building Bonds, Series 2015; levying a tax and providing for the security and payment thereof; approving the sale of the bonds; approving the purchase agreement; and enacting other provisions relating thereto. Second by Mr. Brown. Motion carried 6-0-0.

Mr. Grange moved to call for the board election to be held May 9, 2015. Second by Mr. Bolton. Motion carried 6-0-0.

Mr. Barrow moved to appoint Reva Williams and Janet Grange as election judges for the May 9, 2015, board election. Second by Mr. Mitchell. Motion carried 6-0-0.

Business Manager Denise Adams presented budget reports.

The Board reviewed the MasterCard statement

Mr. Mitchell moved to approve the checks as presented. Second by Mr. Barrow. Motion carried 6-0-0.

Mrs. Adams presented the finance reports including the accounts payable, cash report, financial reports (budget to actual), Area School District’s Fund Balance Report and the 2014 Comptroller Property Value Study Results.

No one attended the public hearing on the 2013-14 TAPR (Texas Academic Performance Report). Board members previously received the copy of the 2013-14 TAPR report in December 2014.

Mr. Mitchell moved to give the superintendent the authority to solicit quotes to build a storage building at Buck Stadium. Second by Mr. Grange. Motion carried 6-0-0.

Mr. Bolton moved to approve Green Plains Design for improvements to the practice field. Second by Mr. Barrow. Motion carried 6-0-0.

The Board entered closed session at 8:15 p.m. according to Texas Government Code 551.074 and reconvened in open session at 9:05 p.m.
Mr. Mitchell moved that contracts for Billy Boone, Elementary Principal, Darla Forney, High School/Junior High Principal and Rex Beck, Athletic Director, be renewed. Second by Mr. Brown. Motion carried 6-0-0.

• Schoolway App update – we are still working on getting it set up and hopefully it will replace Alertnow completely. One message can be sent via Schoolway and it will automatically post to the White Deer Facebook page.
• Talent Ed & Hire Software – a more effective way to recruit new hires and then track them. It will automatically post to Region 16 job board. The system will allow for automatic scheduling of interviews and automatic reference surveys to be sent out to listed references.

Review of resignations – Terry Cox has notified us he is retiring at the end of the year.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:40 p.m.
